Sotheby’s First Mainland China Auction Raises $37 Million
In September 2012, Sotheby's became the first international auction house licensed to conduct auctions in China through its joint venture Sotheby's (Beijing) Auction Co., Ltd. An historic inaugural auction was held in Beijing on 27 September, 2012, which confirmed Sotheby's dedication to the Asian art market and celebrated this unique and ground-breaking partnership, a joint venture that enables Sotheby's to bring its world class expertise, innovation and professional integrity to its clients in China.
Since Sotheby's Beijing office opened, it has become a valuable resource for local clients. China and its growing class of collectors has been one of the most attractive growth markets for the company, and collectors from this region have become a significant force in our salerooms worldwide.
